Most Americans think political power comes through elections, laws, courts, and government. Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) understood that power begins much earlier, inside culture itself.
Gramsci, an Italian Marxist intellectual, developed the concept commonly known as cultural hegemony. Cultural hegemony is the process by which a dominant group gradually shapes society’s values, beliefs, and definitions until its worldview is embraced and accepted as normal, moral, common sense – and unquestionable.
Gramsci’s theory was that lasting political change does not depend only on controlling government. He emphasized the importance of infiltrating and influencing civil society – schools, universities, churches, newspapers, intellectual institutions, associations, and other organizations that shape public opinion and teach people what is normal, moral, acceptable, and true.
Then as now, these institutions shape people long before they ever enter a voting booth.
This is how leftist cultural hegemony operates today: change the culture first, and changing the law becomes much easier.
CHANGE THE DEFINITION, CHANGE THE DEBATE
One of the most effective ways to change culture is to change the meaning of words. If you control the definition, you can often control the debate.
Consider marriage.
For generations, marriage was broadly understood as the union of a man and a woman. Over time, the debate became less about the historic definition of marriage and more about whether maintaining that definition constituted discrimination.
The question changed from:
“What is marriage?” to: “Why are you denying someone else’s rights?”
The deeper battle became who had the authority to redefine the cultural standard.
The same pattern can be seen with gender.
For generations, Americans generally understood male and female in terms of biological sex. Today, many institutions distinguish gender identity from biological sex.
Notice the pattern:
• A new definition is introduced.
• Universities intellectualize it.
• Schools teach it.
• Corporations adopt the terminology.
• Media normalize it.
The issue is no longer: “What does gender mean?”
It becomes: “Will you affirm the new definition?”
FROM TOLERANCE TO AFFIRMATION
Consider tolerance.
Tolerance traditionally meant allowing people to live peacefully despite disagreement. Increasingly, however, tolerance is treated as requiring affirmation.
Under the traditional concept: “You may disagree with me.”
Under the newer expectation: “Your disagreement can be portrayed as intolerance.”
The definition changes. Then the expectation changes. Then the culture changes. Eventually, those assumptions become what society considers common sense.
HOW CULTURAL HEGEMONY WORKS
The process is usually gradual.
An idea begins as radical. Then it becomes controversial. Then tolerated. Then accepted. Then normalized. Then celebrated. Eventually, opposition to it becomes controversial.
Once that happens, government does not have to force everyone to conform. Society begins policing itself.
People begin censoring themselves because they understand the social consequences of disagreement.
THE REAL OBJECTIVE
The real objective of cultural hegemony is establishing who possesses the authority to define what is normal.
If leftist cultural elites control the definitions, they gain enormous influence. A traditional belief can be redefined as prejudice. Disagreement can be labeled hatred. Traditional morality can be recast as extremism.
Eventually, ordinary citizens begin embracing and enforcing those standards against one another.
Fighting back against leftist cultural hegemony is difficult, but essential. As I have stated before: “Resistance to subversive ideology is framed as divisive, while compliance is portrayed as unity. In reality, what is being asked is not unity…but surrender.”
This is why conservatives cannot focus only on elections.
You can win the presidency while losing the universities. You can control Congress while losing the schools. You can win legislatures while losing entertainment, journalism, corporations, and even churches. Eventually, politics follows culture.
Conservatives must counter leftist cultural hegemony. They must engage the institutions that shape society. Parents must engage their schools. Christians must understand what their churches are teaching. Citizens must scrutinize political language. Conservatives must build and support educational, media, business, civic, and cultural institutions rather than simply surrendering them.
Whenever a familiar word receives a new definition, ask:
Who changed it? Why? What belief was previously considered normal? Why is it now unacceptable? Who gains power from the new definition?
The lesson is simple:
Change the words, and you change the thoughts.
Change the thoughts, and you change the values.
Change the values, and you change the culture.
Change the culture, and you change the laws.
The greatest victory of leftist cultural hegemony comes when society falls prey to it and defends the new culture, believing those beliefs were reached entirely on their own. And once you change the culture, eventually you change the country.
